On December 11, 2025, the Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health (PCMCH) hosted a strategic retreat with government and health sector leaders from the Regional Network Operational Forum (RNOF). The gathering provided an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Ontario’s regional maternal‑child health networks (“regional networks”) over the past year and to begin shaping shared priorities for 2026 and beyond.

RNOF brings together representatives from regional networks, Ontario Health Regions, PCMCH, BORN Ontario and the Ministry of Health to build capacity and collaborate on shared priorities across the continuum of care.

The retreat reflected the geographic diversity of the regional networks, with attendees coming from all corners of the province – from Thunder Bay to Ottawa to London. The event featured presentations from PCMCH, the Ministry of Health, Ontario Health and regional network representatives as well as a strategy session with breakout groups and larger group discussions. During this session, attendees explored the core elements of the regional networks, including aspects that are working well, opportunities for growth, and next steps towards an ideal future state.

The retreat sparked new connections and ideas among partners. Most importantly, it facilitated greater coordination on shared priorities, including addressing important provincial health issues, such as reducing the spread of RSV and other respiratory illnesses; enhancing collaboration among regional partners; and expanding healthcare provider education. These priorities will help guide the regional networks into 2026 and beyond.

Voices from the Retreat

RNOF Co-Chair Marnie Lightfoot reflected on the power of in‑person engagement: “The December RNOF Retreat was more than a gathering – it was a celebration of how far we’ve come and a powerful reminder of the strength of in-person collaboration. The retreat gave us space to pause, reflect, and recognize the remarkable strides we’ve made over the past year – a direct result of our collective effort, shared vision and commitment to progress.”

Co-Chair Dr. Julia Orkin highlighted the momentum generated through shared learning: “The RNOF Retreat brought together provincial representation across Ontario Health, PCMCH and network leadership, creating a valuable space for shared learning and alignment. There was a palpable sense of excitement and momentum for improvement, particularly around how we can better connect strategy to frontline impact.”
