Artificial intelligence is one of the most discussed topics in healthcare today. As the health sector considers its potential, attention is increasingly focused on how AI can support care delivery, planning and decision-making.
For PCMCH, this is both an opportunity and a responsibility. Our mission is to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities through evidence-informed leadership, collaboration and system improvement. As AI evolves, these priorities remain as relevant as ever. Many of the principles emerging from national conversations about AI in healthcare, including transparency, accountability, equity, privacy, and human-centred design, align closely with the values that have long guided PCMCH’s work.
Like many organizations, we are learning, adapting and exploring how AI can support our work. This includes building staff knowledge, developing internal policies, and ensuring that any use of AI reflects our commitment to evidence, ethics and sound decision-making.
This issue of Milestones explores AI through the lens of data, evidence and responsible innovation. It features a conversation with Dr. Astrid Guttmann, who reflects on how data and AI can support healthcare planning, research and system improvement. We also share a selection of resources to help inform conversations about AI in healthcare.
As we look ahead, there are several developments we are watching closely: accelerating investments in health data infrastructure; growing expectations around responsible AI governance; and a shift in focus from AI itself to the impact it can have on care outcomes and system performance. The future of healthcare innovation will be shaped as much by how we implement as by technology itself. PCMCH will continue to monitor these developments with a focus on evidence, equity and patient-centred care.
The future of AI in healthcare will not be shaped by technology alone. It will depend on collaboration among healthcare providers, researchers, patients, families, policymakers and system leaders. Together, we can help ensure that AI is used in ways that improve outcomes for pregnant individuals, children, youth, families and communities across Ontario.
