Adapting to Change, Listening to Our Partners
Over the past year, we have been listening closely to our partners and reflecting on how we can continue to support Ontario’s perinatal, newborn, child and youth health system. These insights and conversations have helped shape important changes in how we work, how we share information and how we support improvement across the province. Read more >
INTENTIONS
A dedicated space for reflection on Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous culture and the need for greater health equity.
In many Indigenous communities, Spring is celebrated as a time of renewal and gratitude. One common practice is to harvest Maple Syrup. The sap from Maple Trees is seen as a gift from Creator. Nanaboozhoo, a trickster spirit in the Anishinaabe Culture, once found the people laying on their backs in the forest, drinking the Maple Syrup from the trees. Nanaboozhoo knew they could not let the people be lazy. So, Nanaboozhoo went to the river and brought back some water to dilute the trees. By doing so, the trickster ensured the people were grateful for the gift, as they now had to work hard as a community to collect many gallons of sap to harvest one jar of syrup.
What we know from Nanaboozhoo in this story is that gratitude and respect for nature are reciprocated with gifts from the Land. When this teaching is extended to all aspects of life, we understand the value of community, and how respectful relationships can nurture wellbeing.
